An Unexpected Pleasure

Unexpected Beauty
Unexpected Beauty

by Volkhard Graf

As photographers we are training ourselves to pay attention to light and its interplay with the subject of our photography. While out driving my school bus route, the sun was low over the ridges of the canyon walls that hide our little town. I have the pleasure of living in a beautiful area of north-central Idaho and the stunning vista I saw lit up in the warm golden colors of the early afternoons “blue hour” were simply gorgeous. Completing my route, I knew it would be too late to get my gear and drive back to the spot, particularly with the icy roads. Then I remembered that my smartphone has a decent camera. Having dropped off all students, I just put the bus in park at my turn around point, walked a few steps and took several shots.

More than just enjoying the beautiful, unexpected moment, I was filled with gratitude for the Creator of this scenery. So much detailed artistry goes without being seen or appreciated by any soul. I gave thanks to the Maker of all, for delighting me with this scene. Even more so for providing the light without which no picture could be enjoyed.  I also marveled at the awesome power and creativity of Creator God, contrasted with the fact that he is not distant or stand-offish, but close, seeking relationship and being delighted in me enjoying and thanking Him for what He created. Thank you Creator God for not only making light, you are The Light. As Jesus, Creator’s Son states: “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12)
